Preventing child fatalities caused by car accidents

Texas car accident attorneyCar accidents are the leading cause of death among children, underscoring the life-saving importance of child car seats. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the seats reduce the chance of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. NHTSA also reports that an alarming 46 percent of seats are misused.

In Texas, the law requires children younger than 8 – unless they are over 4 feet, 9 inches tall – to be in a car seat when in a passenger vehicle. Children under 13 should ride in the back seat, secured by either a seat belt or safety seat.

Nonetheless, in Texas last year crashes claimed the lives of:

  • 62 children younger than 8, with 16 of them not restrained
  • 56 children 8-12, with 21 of them not restrained
