Neutrogena issued a nationwide recall of its Light Therapy Acne Mask and Activator in July 2019 due to “reports of visual effects” from using the mask and activator, even though the brand ─ owned by corporate giant Johnson & Johnson ─ claims visual effects are “rare, generally mild and transient.”
“For a small subset of the population with certain underlying eye conditions, as well as for users taking medications which could enhance ocular photosensitivity, there is a theoretical risk of eye injury.” ─ Neutrogena Light Therapy Mask Recall Statement

How the Light Therapy Acne Mask was supposed to work
Neutrogena’s Light Therapy Acne Mask was supposed to treat and prevent acne through the use of red-light therapy (reduces acne inflammation) and blue-light therapy (kills acne bacteria).
The acne face mask was intended to be worn by the user, who could control the red and blue LED lights with a battery-operated activator wand. Retailing between $30-40, the mask came with one activator and was meant to be used for 10 minutes a day over a 30-day period to “penetrate the skin at various depths and stimulate the skin’s physiology.”
Injuries that could arise from using Neutrogena’s Light Therapy Acne Mask and Activator include:
- Vision loss
- Retinal damage
- Loss of peripheral vision
- Eye irritation/pain/discomfort
- Changes in vision, such as color vision
- Seeing flashes of light/spots
- Blurry vision
Individuals with eye-related disorders such as ocular albinism or retinitis pigmentosa and those who are taking certain medications such as Retin-A or Accutane are especially at risk of suffering an eye injury by repeatedly using Neutrogena’s Light Therapy Acne Mask since their retinas may be more sensitive to light.

Neutrogena recklessly put its Light Therapy Mask on the market without proper eye protection and sufficiently ensuring the safety of its users. Adequate eye protection that would not allow light to penetrate the user’s retinas should have been included with Neutrogena’s Light Therapy Mask, but instead the company took a cavalier approach to making sure its product was 100 percent safe for everyone.
