You've been hurt in a Dallas car accident... here's what to do next
The attorneys at the Dallas law firm Tracey & Fox have years of experience helping people injured in car accidents. We know how upsetting and confusing the entire experience can be. Right after a crash, people often don't know what do.
What to Do After a Car Accident
Call the police
This is a good idea, even if the accident is minor. The police will make sure everyone is OK and safely divert traffic around the accident scene. They will talk to everyone involved, including witnesses, and gather evidence. Their report will document important details about what happened.
Get medical attention
If an ambulance is called, let emergency medical personnel examine you, even if you don't think you're hurt. You may have injuries and not be aware of them. If an ambulance is not called, go to a doctor or the emergency room. It's important to make sure you are OK. If you are hurt, health-care workers can treat you and document your injuries. Be sure to go to any follow-up appointments.
Write down the names, license numbers, insurance information and contact information of all drivers involved in the accident. Don't talk about who was at fault and don't admit to doing anything wrong. Also get the names and contact information for any witnesses.
If you are able to, take photos of the accident scene with your cell phone or camera. Get photos of all vehicles involved, including the damage to those vehicles. Also take photos of any traffic signals or road signs nearby.
Write down what happened
When you get a few moments, write an account of the accident as you remember it. This can help you record important details before you forget them.
Call your insurance company
Let them know you've been involved in a car accident. They need to know even if the other driver was at fault. At this point, you don't have to give them a statement or explain what happened. You are just letting them know.
Call an attorney
It's important to do this as soon as possible after the accident. If you call Tracey & Fox, we can take steps to preserve evidence at the crash scene. This can help us build a strong case against the other driver. Don't give a statement to the insurance company or accept any settlement offer before getting legal advice. One of our experienced Dallas car accident attorneys can advise you of your legal options.
