A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on May 29th, 2008 presented findings by a Canadian government team that found Trasylol was two times as likely to cause death as similar and almost as equally effective drugs. Prior to this, a 2006 study had already reported the following side effects:
- Increased risk of stroke, heart attack and encephalopathy (brain disease)
- Two times the risk of renal failure (kidney failure)
Trasylol was developed to reduce blood loss in patients undergoing complex surgeries. After its initial release on the market in 1993, Trasylol (aprotinin injection) was used in approximately one third of the nation’s heart surgeries.
