The popular antidepressant Prozac (Fluoxetine) has been linked to serious birth defects. In 2005, Paxil was the first SSRI to come under scrutiny from the FDA, following the release of studies showing that use of Paxil in pregnancy increases the risk of having babies born with : various Cardiovascular defects, Craniosynstosis, Omphalocele, Gastroschisis, and Neural tube defects. Since that time studies have come out linking Prozac and other SSRI's to the same types of birth defects. Scientists now think that the entire class of SSRI's are implicated in increasing the risk of birth defects.
Congenital Heart Defects
Thus far only Paxil has had its Pregnancy warning increased from a category C to D. This alerts doctors that the drug has been shown in well designed and conducted studies to cause birth defects in humans. Since the Paxil Label change, another study has come out showing that Prozac increases the risk of heart defects by almost five times. There is a possibility that the FDA will make a change to SSRI's labels as a class. Click here for information on other SSRI's
