The CDC Links Vicodin, OxyContin, Codeine and Other Opioid Painkillers to Birth Defects
Some of the most popular painkillers like Codeine, Vicodin, Percocet and OxyContin have recently been linked to a number of very serious birth defects. A recent study was conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and will be published in the upcoming issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. To date it is the largest study ever conducted on the use of opioid medication. The results of the study are particularly alarming because up until now opioid painkillers have been thought to be relatively safe for use during pregnancy. In fact, most of these drugs have been around for decades and are now offered as generics.

Study Results
The study examined the use of opioid painkillers during the first trimester of pregnancy and found a doubling or more of the risk of having a baby with birth defects. In particular, there was an increased risk for a variety of heart defects including: hypoplastic left heart syndrome, ventricular septal defects (VSDs), atrial septal defects (ASDs), Tetralogy of Fallot, and right ventricular outflow tract obstructions (RVOTOs), including pulmonary valve stenosis. The study authors also found increased risks for gastroschisis (herniation of the abdominal wall), glaucoma, hydrocephaly and spina bifida.
The FDA has placed opioids in a Pregnancy Category C, which means either no human studies have been done, or they have not shown positive evidence for birth defects. The Tracey Law Firm is currently reviewing birth defect cases regarding the maternal use of opioids during pregnancy.
