Lexapro is an antidepressant drug that is often used to treat anxiety and depression. Unfortunately, the use of Lexapro and other antidepressant medications have been found to cause birth defects and birth injuries.

Recent Denmark Study
In a recent study published in Clinical Epidemiology, researchers found that taking antidepressants (SSRI/SNRI), including Lexapro (generic Escitalopram), while pregnant, doubles or in some cases quadruples the risk of birth defects. The study looked at over 200,000 pregnant women from Denmark. The authors found that the risk of serious heart malformations was more than doubled when a pregnant woman, took an SSRI in the first trimester of pregnancy. The risk was even greater with Lexapro and was found to double the risk of any type of malformation and quadrupled the risk of septal defects — a type of heart defect.
Other birth injuries and defects associated with Lexapro include:
- Heart and lung defects (holes in the atrial or ventral septum)
- Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN)
- Omphalocele (an abdominal birth defect)
- Hydrocephalus (water on the brain)
- Craniosynostosis (causes the head to be misshapen)
If you believe your child was affected by the use of Lexapro, you may be able to receive financial compensation for medical expenses, future medical care, lost wages, emotional trauma and more. This can make all the difference in the level of care that your child is able to receive.
