New Study Links IBD to Accutane Use
A recent 2010 study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found a more than five times increase in Ulcerative Colitis in users of Accutane. The study was conducted by Dr. Seth Crockett from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. To date, this is the largest study ever done focusing on the link between IBD and Accutane.
Another 2006 study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology looked at reports filed with the FDA. This study examined the association of Accutane use and IBD. The lead author was Dr. Deepa Reddy from the University of Chicago. Dr. Reddy found that in the vast majority of cases (73%), Accutane was either "probable" or "highly probable" in causing IBD.

Most doctors and patients know that the acne drug Accutane can cause serious birth defects in the children of patients who are pregnant while taking the drug. The drug label and packaging clearly warn against taking the medication while pregnant. Other problems with Accutane are less well-known.
Accutane and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Accutane can cause Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. While these may not be fatal conditions, there is no known cure for IBD.
A study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology in 2006 is one of several that link Accutane to an increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease. People have contracted IBD after taking only a single course of Accutane. The symptoms of IBD may not appear for months - or even years - after you take the drug.
If you developed an inflammatory bowel disorder within four years of taking your last dose of Accutane, it is important to discuss your case with an attorney who understands the complex legal and medical issues involved in these cases.
